Vegetarian feasts in a relaxed setting at Milgi Lounge in Cardiff
Being a lover of vegetarian food and having a fondness for greyhounds, I couldn’t wait to visit Milgi Lounge in Cardiff – a vegetarian café bar which is named after the Welsh word for greyhound. Going through the front door of what looks like a relatively small café from the front, you’re greeted with a relaxed seating area with sofas, DJ decks and a long bar.
Carry on walking, past the delicious cake display into the main eating area which is filled with vintage tables, chairs and quirky wall features such as a plywood moose-head hanging from a starry wall next to a fun picture plate display.
Peppering the wall décor are various blackboards displaying the menu which changes weekly, including curry of the week, and my favourite, the weekly wholefood bowl, which aims to ‘nourish and flourish’. On my first visit, the superfood bowl and homemade juice were so good that I went back the following week by myself for a midweek lunchtime treat. I could have stayed in the café all afternoon and found it hard to drag myself back to the office!
So far, I’ve only visited during the day but from what I could gather from overhearing numerous phone bookings while I was there, it’s a popular place in the evenings too. The food is complemented by delicious-sounding cocktails including a chilli mojito, which is definitely on my list for next time. Milgi takes music and art as seriously as its food and creates a monthly playlist podcast, as well as providing a space for local artists to display their work.
Best of all is the yurt in the backyard, which contains a random selection of sofas, lamps and tables; perfect for chilling out with a cocktail or two and reliving summer festival days!
